A Florida REAL ID is a type of credential that you can obtain from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV). These credentials are similar to regular licenses and identification cards.
However, getting one requires you to submit additional documentation proving your identity and state residency. In general, these cards are distinguished from standard cards by the presence of a gold star in the corner.
According to the federal REAL ID act, you need to present a secure ID to board domestic airline flights or enter federal facilities starting in October 2020. Because the DHSMV has been in compliance with the act since 2010, chances are that you already have a real ID driver’s license or identification card. Otherwise, you will need to get a license or ID that complies with the act before the 2020 deadline in order to use your license or ID when flying domestically. On the other hand, it is important to note that you can continue using a passport or another form of identification if you do not upgrade your credentials to a secure card on time.
Furthermore, be mindful that all new credentials issued by the DHSMV will be Florida REAL IDs, meaning that you will eventually be issued a federally-compliant card if you apply for a new license or renew your card in the near future. If your next renewal does not occur until after 2020, it is recommended that you renew early in order to get your card updated.
